Solo Female Travel: Safety, Confidence, and Embracing the Adventure
Solo traveling is an empowering experience, especially for women. It pushes you out of your comfort zone, builds confidence, and allows you to explore the world on your own terms. It is one big factor that made me the woman I am today.
To be honest, when I tried traveling solo for the first time, I never thought of the danger or anything about my safety. I was probably naive and young back then. However, after so many trips, I realized that safety and preparation are key to making your trip smooth and enjoyable and there are a lot of things to consider.
Here are essential solo travel tips for women throughout my solo traveling experiences:
1. Do Your Research Before You Go. Prioritize Safety at All Times.
Proper research is crucial for a smooth solo travel experience—at least for every trip, solo or not.
Choose solo-friendly destinations. Some places are more accommodating to solo female travelers. In my case, I started solo traveling with domestic destinations here in the Philippines. It’s an advantage that you’re still in your own country and your confidence will build there.
Read travel blogs and forums. Learn from others' experiences and get insider tips on safety and attractions. I joined some Facebook groups that are based on the location I am going to.
Understand cultural norms. Avoid unintentionally offending locals by learning about dress codes, gestures, and social etiquette. This is for domestic too and not just for international trips.
2. Plan your itinerary and book your hotel ahead. Be financially ready.
You will like the freedom in solo traveling but it’s still best to plan your itinerary and book everything ahead. I like to maximize my time but also have time for work and good rest each day. Very tita! And yes, this is how you do it when you reach your 30s! Haha. Work life balance!
Choose your hotel or place wisely. I know there are cheaper hotels and airbnb’s but your safety is always the priority.
Solo travel is not cheap to be honest. You have no one to split the finances. This is why I also advise that you be financially ready. It’s all gonna be on you. The key to this is research and setting a budget.
You can find cheaper places or hostels, but always remember that your safety is always your priority. I solo traveled to Siargao and it’s one thing I learned. I found cheaper hostels but it’s not near the main area. I was hesitant. Luckily, I found a hotel that is cheaper than most hotels in the main area, it’s a solo room, and safe. It is just walking distance to most restaurants and stores.
Keep a backup plan and have alternative routes or accommodations in case things don’t go as expected.
Know transportation options. Research safe and reliable transportation options to avoid getting stranded.
Safety should always come first when traveling alone. Research local safety conditions. Look up crime rates, common scams, and safe areas for solo female travelers. If you think it’s risky, better not to push the trip, especially if you already feel uneasy. Trust your instincts – If something feels off, remove yourself from the situation immediately.
Always inform a trusted friend or family member about your whereabouts. Share your location and itinerary. No secrets and always update! Maintaining communication with loved ones is crucial.
Get a local SIM card or portable Wi-Fi. Staying connected helps with navigation and emergencies.
Stay aware of your surroundings. Avoid distractions like excessive phone use when walking alone.
Carry emergency contacts. Have the local embassy’s contact, hotel’s contact number, a trusted local friend, and emergency numbers saved on your phone.
3. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone.
Solo travel is all about growth and self-discovery. Push yourself to try new experiences.
When I first solo traveled, I already got out of my comfort zone as I tried parasailing in Boracay alone. I was not that adventurous back home. Ever since that day, I like the feeling, and the adrenaline rush I felt that time. It made me crave more.
Talk to locals and fellow travelers. Engaging with people can lead to amazing experiences and lifelong friendships. I was not used to this before. But I am now meeting new people and it’s one thing I am proud of. See how solo traveling can make you grow as a person too! Solo traveling made me friendly and at least very open to cultures.
But still, do not set aside your safety. Set your boundaries. Be observant and do not engage when you feel something's off.
As a foodie, solo travel is the perfect opportunity to indulge in authentic local food. I like to try new cafes and restaurants.
Join group tours or classes – Activities like cooking classes, walking tours, or adventure sports can make solo travel more enjoyable.
Say yes to safe adventures whether it's skydiving or a spontaneous road trip, and embrace experiences that excite you.
4. Pack Smart and Light
Packing efficiently can make your solo journey more convenient. As a girly pop who loves to dress up at every destination, I always overpack especially when I was just starting.
I learned to pack versatile clothing. Choose outfits that can be mixed and matched for different occasions. Good thing my wardrobe now is more on neutral colors and basic fits! Haha. When planning my itinerary, I also plan my outfits ahead, just so I don't overpack anymore.
Carry a personal safety alarm – A small, loud alarm can deter potential threats.
Bring a portable charger – Staying connected is essential for navigation and emergencies. I currently have two power banks and it’s very useful when traveling and for concerts. One is wired while one is a MagSafe.
Use anti-theft bags – Crossbody bags with anti-theft features can prevent pickpocketing. I always have that one mini sling bag where I put my wallet and essentials. It’s my go-to bag. No need for bigger bags especially when traveling.
5. Embrace Solo Time and Self-Discovery
One of the best parts of solo travel is personal growth. I must say this is one thing I love about solo travel. It also gives me an escape.
Enjoy your own company whether it's sipping coffee in a quaint café or watching the sunset, and learn to appreciate solitude.
Journal your experiences – Writing down your thoughts and adventures helps capture memories. Well, in my case, I like to take pictures, look back and reminisce. It’s nice to
Celebrate small wins – Every successful trip, interaction, or challenge overcome is an achievement!
Solo travel for women is an enriching and liberating experience. By prioritizing safety, planning, and stepping out of your comfort zone, you can make your journey both memorable and empowering. Whether you're wandering through the streets of Manila, exploring Boracay’s beaches, or discovering hidden gems, trust yourself and enjoy the adventure!
